More Comic Con 2012 stories, because there were so damn many:
I had nothing against Shia LaBeouf before SDCC 2012. Despite the entire Transformers series and Indiana Jones 4 being not my cup of tea, I don’t hold anything against actors who are in things I don’t like. I don’t even fault Shia for making his own little comic book (or whatever it is), despite never taking the time to learn how to write or draw in any discernable way. What I DID have a problem with is him marching down to the convention floor on a whim, and overshadowing tons of talented indy creators who HAVE put in a ton of time learning how to write and draw with his FREE SWAG. I would even be okay with him handing it out ANYWHERE BUT AT SMALL PRESS.
Most of the people there are just hoping to break even with the gas money they spent getting there, and for some millionaire celebrity to waltz in and peddle free work he spent maybe a couple hours on is *insulting.* It also chums the water for the 70% of SDCC-goers who are only there for celebrity sightings and free swag instead of comics.
No, sorry bro, the comic I sacrificed all my sleep for - in addition to my day job - is not free. Some of these folks snatch books off of people’s tables without even asking, assuming that they’re free. It can be frustrating.
Rant over. I have a lot to say about Shia LaBeouf, but I feel like it’s healthier putting it into my comic than it is to carry around a grudge against some random celebrity I’ve never actually met… I’m sure he’s a nice guy (?).
