When I’m not drawing comics, I train at and help run a taekwondo school in Rhode Island. I found some old boards that were about to be thrown out, so this is what I do after work hours: I practice my knifehand strikes. The boards are a tax write-off; I might have to fight crime to do field research for my superhero books.

cause board-breaking is kinda seen as par for the course in martial arts I think, and really it doesn’t look like he’s doing a whole lot but you have to understand

Watch clips from most tournaments, katas, performances etc.

and when the board-breaking happens, it’s almost always 

• held by another person
• with both hands
• and both elbows locked out

This makes an “anchored” board which mean all the energy of your strike is ending up where you’re focusing it, rather than getting all sloppy and wasted in moving the entire board

Dude here is breaking it himself, one-handed, with no elbows to anchor 

do you have any idea how needlepointed your knifehand has to be to still be effective on a functionally “fluid” target

Correct! Speed breaks are done without a second anchor point, but it’s not necessarily a detail that most folks notice unless they’ve tried it and realize how different it is.

And no, it wasn’t a pre-cracked board.
